Frontier Mainline: The Ultimate Western Railway Restoration Project

Imagine walking up to the ticket counter in Saint Denis and choosing your own trans-continental adventure. Frontier Mainline is an upcoming railway network project for Red Dead Redemption 2 that introduces multiple new routing options to completely transform how you travel across the frontier.

The mod will launch only when these core paths are fully operational. You will be able to choose between different scheduled services, such as scenic lines running straight through Blackwater and the Great Plains, high-speed express routes that bypass the city entirely via Manzanita Post to cut down travel time, and direct lines looping back through Bonnie’s farm or potentially diving straight across the border into Mexico.

How the Tracks Were Built:
To ensure full accuracy, the track layouts take direct inspiration from the historic rail networks of the original Red Dead Redemption. Every single section of custom track has been built from scratch, using existing public mods purely as a reference point to strictly follow Rockstar's original RDR1 coordinates.

Here is a breakdown of the current teaser map:

  • 🔵 The Blue Route (Great Plains & Tall Trees Loop): This layout is officially locked in and highly driveable. It runs seamlessly through Blackwater and past Manzanita Post, with essential junctions near Thieves' Landing and MacFarlane's Ranch. I’ve already completed several successful test runs over these sections, including the classic Armadillo junction pointing toward the northern tunnel.

  • 💗 The Pink Route (Riggs Station Extension): This is the proposed northern tracking link to connect the western route back into the main RDR2 network. The exact alignment is still subject to change while I fine-tune the terrain adjustments, the river crossing, and ensure the bridge approaches look and feel right from the cab.

Visuals vs. Physics:
Some of the custom-laid track sections might still look a bit visually rough or "janky" on the ground right now, but the in-game physics engine handles it beautifully! The locomotives and wagons glide over these spots perfectly without any derailments. I am currently running intensive QA checks on switches, clearance, and bridge props before calling the main loop fully ready.

Future Goals & Mod Compatibility:

  • Fully Operational AI Trains: A complete scheduled service where you can actually buy a ticket at the windows and ride seamlessly across regions with multiple routing options.

  • Railroad Engineer Compatibility: Designed to work perfectly alongside the popular Railroad Engineer mod for players who want to manually drive the trains themselves with full control.

  • Map Mod Integration: Highly recommended and designed around Project New Austin 1907 and the Nuevo Paraíso (Mexico) mod to offer the definitive trans-continental experience.

  • Potential Custom Stations: The vanilla RDR2 map will not receive any extra stops as it is already complete, but I am exploring the option of adding new immersion checkpoints along the custom routes using pre-existing map buildings that logically fit the railway theme (depending on what is technically available in areas like Mexico).

The Power of AI Collaboration:
To be completely transparent: this massive undertaking would have been 100% impossible without the help of AI. I have been collaborating closely with Google AI and ChatGPT, with GPT Work acting as my co-developer—directly navigating my game files to rebuild nodes using base-game assets, calculate complex track geometry, and help me optimize a colossal load order of over 420 active mods to keep the engine running rock-solid, perfectly locked and capped at a smooth 66 FPS!

Development speed is strictly tied to the weekly usage limits of my AI tool, so progress happens in focused bursts whenever the limits reset, meaning the mod will remain in private testing until everything is operational and polished.

I’d love to hear your thoughts! Which upcoming route would you buy a ticket for first on the Frontier Mainline?

Warm greetings from your train driver, Mara!
